1. Sodium formate is one of the simplest organic carboxylate, white crystal or powder.
2. Slightly deliquable and hygroscopic. Soluble in about 1.3 parts of water and glycerin, slightly soluble in ethanol, octanol, insoluble in ether.
3. Its aqueous solution is alkaline.
4. When heated, sodium formate breaks down into hydrogen and sodium oxalate, which then forms sodium carbonate.
5. Sodium formate is mainly used in the production of insurance powder, oxalic acid. In the leather industry, it is used as a camouflage acid in the chromium tannery process, as a catalyst and stabilizing synthetic agent, and as a reducing agent in the printing and dyeing industry. Sodium formate is harmless to the human body and can irritate the eyes, respiratory system and skin.
