    The graphite in cast iron crystallized into a spherical additive, called "spheroidizing agent". The main components of "spheroidizing agent" are spheroidizing elements, such as Mg, Ce, Ca, etc. The spherical graphite in nodular cast iron is cast iron liquid after spheroidization, so that its strength is much higher than gray cast iron, toughness is better than malleable cast iron, but also can maintain a series of advantages of gray cast iron. However, the "spheroidizing agent" used in the casting of nodular cast iron can increase the tendency of the weld to produce "white opening" and hardening structure, and induce cracks in the weld and heat affected zone (especially the fusion zone). So the weldability of nodular cast iron is worse than that of gray cast iron.

Applications
 

    Field of cast iron casting. Magnesium content of 4%, 5%, 5.5% belong to low magnesium spheroidizing agent, RE between 1%-2%, mostly used for medium frequency furnace melting, low sulfur liquid iron spheroidizing treatment. It has the advantages of mild spheroidizing reaction and easy absorption of spheroidizing elements. Magnesium content of 6%, 7% is magnesium series spheroidizing agent, used for cupola, electric furnace double smelting, or medium frequency furnace smelting pearlescent type cast nodular cast iron castings. According to the wall thickness of the casting and the sulfur content of the original molten iron, the appropriate amount of spheroidizing agent is determined. The application range is wide and the spheroidizing process is broad. High magnesium series spheroidizing agent, suitable for cupola smelting, sulfur content 0.06%-0.09% of liquid iron, adding amount between 1.6%-2.0%. Low aluminum spheroidizing agent is used in castings prone to subcutaneous porosity defects and castings requiring aluminum content in liquid iron. Pure Ce, pure La production of spheroidizing agent, after spheroidizing treatment of iron liquid pure inclusions less, round graphite ball. The spheroidizing agent produced by yttrium heavy rare earth is suitable for large section castings, delaying spheroidizing decline and preventing block graphite. The spheroidizing agent containing Sb is used for pearlescent nodular cast iron. Low silicon spheroidizing agent is suitable for casting plants that use a large amount of return charge; Nickel-magnesium spheroidizing agent is used for high nickel austenitic nodular cast iron.
